About the Club
Warwick University Rugby League is one of the fast growing and most successful sports teams on Campus.
Last season we won the league winning every home match, scoring the most tries and emerging with a 290 goal difference. This year we have had the top try scorers and best defence in the league. In addition we won the annual varsity match against Coventry University for the second year on the run. Achieving “Team of Varsity” along the way when we beat a Coventry team that were massive favourites from the league above.
The reason for our success is that we always get a great number of new players who turn up; some who played for a Super League academy and others who have never picked up a rugby ball before. However, everybody gets the same level of attention and by having two teams we can ensure that everybody gets to have a feel of what it is like to play one of the most exciting sports around. As well as getting to play competitive games we train twice a week with a professional coach who coaches professional team Hemel Stags and is an ex Australian international player.
Our success on the pitch comes as a result of the inclusive culture we have as a club. Every Wednesday night we have a social whether we’ve played or not. At Warwick Rugby League we try and do things a bit differently and so rather than circle at the SU we circle in a lively and friendly bar in Leamington called Murphy’s before we head over to POP! Other socials include mixed circles with women’s aerobics, Take Me Out nights and team trips to live Rugby League matches. All our socials are all about having a great laugh with your mates and we make sure that everybody gets involved as much as possible. Drinking alcohol is by no means necessary and we often have people who come along and don’t drink and have just as good of a night.
Every year we do an international tour as a reward for all the hard work throughout the season. Speaking from experience I can honestly say that tour is the most fun you’ll ever have - whether we end up in Belgrade or Barcelona, it’s always memorable.
